THE ARMED FORCES FUND
Working in partnership with Radley College and St Mary's Calne, Downe House supports the Armed Forces to help fund the education of sons and daughters of Service men and women of all ranks killed or wounded while serving their country.
454 service personnel were killed in Afghanistan alone up to July 2015, currently 14 families with 32 children have approached the Fund; 4 fathers died in service and 9 fathers and 1 mother were seriously wounded.
The Fund continues to strike a chord in the community and following the highly successful Silver Ball in 2014, the fund triumphantly reached the £1 million mark. The Ball, which was held in Diana Bailey's (DH 1971) Planit Supernova venue was attended by 900 friends of Downe House, Radley College and St Mary's, Calne and raised a remarkable £280,000 on the night.
Now with just over £1.9 million the fund has enabled the group to make five carefully means-tested bursary awards. However, there are further applications waiting for finance and whilst every effort is being made within the Foundations of the three schools to raise funds in support we estimate £5 million will be required to meet the requests for help that we continue to receive.
