Happy Day makes everyone….happy!!
Bringing a smile and having fun are the two main aims of the annual Happy Day at Downe House and we hit the jackpot this year with the theme of the Big Kidz Birthday Bash organised by Upper Sixth Formers, Florence Elliott, Head Senior and India Laidlaw, Deputy Head Senior.
Happy Day was blessed with bright sunshine and blue skies and everyone including the staff dressed up as their favourite children's party characters and although it was business as usual with all the girls attending lessons, there was an added layer of joy and exuberance of being out of uniform and spotting some of the more flamboyant fancy dress creations. Our favourites included the two girls dressed as a bunch of grapes and pirates, fairies, princesses and Disney characters and of course, who can forget that the entire PE Department dressed up as the candles on a birthday cake!
The Catering Department joined in with a brilliant party food menu at lunchtime and the cake sale provided the opportunity to buy delicious cakes baked by the Sixth formers, raising funds for their chosen charity, Edclub whose mission is to give disadvantaged kids access to computers and encourage them to learn using the Internet.
After lessons finished, the Farr Centre was transformed into a children’s party with a bouncy castle, ball pit, disco and and the girls enjoyed a fantastic game of Human Hungry (and Happy) Hippos! The day finished with the Giant Filmfest in the PAC – everyone in their PJ’s and duvets watching “The Incredibles”.
The happy atmosphere imbued the whole day with a sense of wellbeing and the feelgood factor and thoroughly reinforced Aristotle’s notion that, “Happiness depends on ourselves”. It was a great day and it certainly seemed to make everyone happy!
