Aisholt win House Dance 2017

Saturday's House Dance Competition preparations began back in February when the House choreographers - Monique for Aisholt, Sacha and Jammy for Holcombe, Kate for AGS, Ella for Tedworth, and Eloise and Ella for AGN - were given the title "This Girl Can" as the stimulus for their choreography.

What followed was weeks of planning, auditioning and rehearsing. A group of up to 12 dancers from each house were directed brilliantly by the Lower Sixth girls to create fantastic pieces of choreography, each promoting the strength, ability, and sass Downe House girls possess.

Alongside the group rehearsals, five brave girls were preparing for their solo performances. Lucy (Holcombe), Clemmie (AGS), Sophie (Tedworth), Georgia (Aisholt), and Frankie (AGN) all took to the stage to showcase their talent and compete for the title of Best Soloist 2017. Each girl did brilliantly, but it was Sophie's technically sound ballet performance that swung it for the judges. Frankie's emotional, contemporary solo to Ed Sheeran's The A Team won her the Highly Commended award.

On the day of the competition, if the adrenaline wasn't pumping enough, five determined girls from each house joined Miss Vallance in a two hour workshop, in which they learnt a routine to perform that evening, as another chance to prove their house was the best. The dancers were treated to a challenging routine that was described by one girl as "harder than physics". Everyone worked so hard, but it was AGS's teamwork and determination to nail the choreography that won them the title for Best Workshop.

Miss Vallance was joined by Kane D Ricca, a tap dancer known for changing the perception of tap with his company, The Pulse Collective, to adjudicate the competition. They were blown away by the girls' talent, and had a very difficult decision to make. Eventually, Ella was awarded Best Choreographer, followed by Monique. Highly Commended Group Dance went to Holcombe and they were just pipped to the post by Aisholt who were crowned overall winners of House Dance 2017.
