National Schools Squash Championships

The National Schools Squash Championships saw the Downe House U19 and U15 squads both come a creditable third place in the finals at England Squash in Manchester, following the regional groups.

The U19 squad consisted of India Burney (Captain), Charlotte Clover (Vice Captain), Nina Bugeja, Millie Hughes and Camilla Farrell and the U15s took Gabi Nelson (Captain), Helena Wormsley, Alessandra Pidgeon, Kitty Shepherd-Cross and Anna Neville. Nina and Anna both won all five of their matches.

Squash coaches Mr Payne and Miss Quarterman, who escorted the teams to Manchester, were full of praise for the girls who came through strongly in the finals. Mr Payne reported, “Squash at Downe is of a very high standard and the teams in both age groups are in the top eight in the country. Our B teams also played in the finals in Manchester. In particular, Nina’s hard work and dedication to daily training came through in her playing, beating the best players from other schools. Well done to everyone who took part and gave their best. We were really pleased to get the chance to see Laura Massaro, who won the British Open Championship last week – it was a real inspiration for the girls.”
