Oyster Society ‘Insight into the World of Fashion’ talk
The latest in the series of Oyster Society talks, which aim to provide an insight into different career paths, saw Downe House alumna, Pom Ogilvy return to Downe House to deliver ‘An insight into the World of Fashion’ to Sixth Form girls.
Lower Sixth former, Alex reports,
“On Monday 8 May, I attended the fascinating talk “An Insight into the World of Fashion” given by Downe House alumna, Pom Ogilvy. We all found her life story very interesting, and were inspired by the wealth of experience she obtained before properly entering the world of fashion, having not gone to university. She undertook work in all aspects of fashion including make-up, model agencies, textile-based courses, magazine writing and many more, which she said really helped with her job applications, making us realise how valuable work experience can be.
Pom shared a great number of stories from her time at Tatler as Fashion Assistant, and more recent tales from her current position as Fashion Co-ordinator at British Vogue. These stories ranged from having a photo shoot in the Olympic swimming pool at 4am to meeting Colin Firth and talking about problems with children despite having none of her own! The talk was full of laughter and truly inspirational stories of her life so far within the fashion world and it left quite a number of us wanting to be in her shoes.
Having attended the talk, I now have a much stronger interest in pursuing a job related to the fashion industry in the near future – it sounds like hard work but a thoroughly enjoyable lifestyle that is definitely worth aspiring to.”
