Tennis at the top
Downe House tennis players were thrilled to spend time with Annabel Croft, former professional British no.1 female tennis player, on 25 May.
As the only school in the country with a team of professional tennis coaches, Downe House maintains a huge focus on tennis, so when the opportunity arose to receive some hands-on coaching from Annabel Croft, the PE department and girls were equally excited.
Annabel gave generously of her time, observing play on the courts and giving tips on technique and match play. Hitting a few balls with Annabel was a very special part of the day for those who took part.
She congratulated the girls and coaching team on the exceptionally high standard of play and general fitness, advising that to take their game to the next level, the girls needed to focus on control rather than power.
Time on the courts was followed by Q & A session with Annabel answering questions on her life as a professional tennis player, how to combine school with training and her subsequent career path. She outlined how she had overcome various obstacles to forge a highly successful presenting career on TV and radio.
With Wimbledon on the horizon, this is a busy time for Annabel, so the PE department were particularly pleased to have an afternoon benefiting from her expertise.
Head of Tennis, Mr Tim Allen, enthused, “It was a real privilege to have Annabel here for the afternoon and totally inspiring for all of us to see a top sportswoman in action, both on and off the court. It has created some special memories and we’ll definitely be tuning in to Wimbledon to hear Annabel’s expert commentary and see her interview today’s top players.”
