Introduction to Sixth Form Week

After the exams are over and they have had a hard-earned break, the Upper Fifth return to Downe to meet the new girls joining the Sixth Form from other schools.

The aim of the week is for them to get to know one another and to introduce them to aspects of Sixth Form life.

Head of Sixth Form, Mrs Philippa Toogood reports,

“On Monday 26th June, we welcomed back our Upper Fifth girls for their first taste of life in the Sixth Form. There was huge excitement as the girls settled back into their mixed age houses and prepared for a packed and diverse week. On Tuesday, they had their first taste of lessons in the Sixth Form, gaining insight into the greater rigour and independence that studying at this level requires.

We headed off to Radley College on Wednesday for the ‘Standing Tall workshop’ where the girls joined with the boys to develop their personal confidence, with everything from interview skills to etiquette and manners on the agenda, including the chance to actually practice their ability to stand tall and face the world head on! Thursday brought the challenge of preparing speeches for the public speaking competition with topics as varied as 'Is everyone just a little bit racist?' to 'Should the voting age be lowered to 16'.

The girls were delighted to move into York House on Thursday and had the opportunity to meet the Lower Sixth tutors at the Jumble Supper and then catch up with friends. We headed off to Bristol University on Friday for a day of talks and tours which inspired all of them to think about their aspirations for Higher Education. The highlight was a campus tour with current students and some real lectures with choices ranging from Pharmacology to Shakespeare.

It was a delight to welcome so many parents to the Public Speaking competition on Saturday morning and hear the girls deliver their talks. We had the best and busiest week and look forward to welcoming this fantastic group of pupils, both new and old, back in September.”
