Global Schools’ Exchange trip to Methodist Ladies College, Melbourne
During the summer holidays, two Upper Fifth and one Lower Sixth girl travelled to Melbourne in Australia for a five-week placement from 12 July to 4 August 2017 at the Methodist Ladies College (MLC) in Melbourne, as part of the Downe House Global Schools’ Exchange Programme.
They enrolled at School for the end of the academic year in Australia and lived in the home of their exchange buddy’s family close to the school.
Fifth Form girl, Victoria told us about her trip,
“It was an amazing experience – our school day started at 8.30am and finished at 3.30am and so we had a lot more time out of school than we do at Downe House but we went on lots of trips in and around Melbourne. It also gave us plenty of time to get to know our exchange buddies and their families.
MLC was a very international community with lots of exchange students from France, Spain and Japan so we didn’t feel at all out of place and it was such an interesting experience to get to know people from so many different places. MLC is a much bigger school than Downe as it has 2000 girls and only 100 are boarders. The learning style was very different based on every girl having a laptop in class and the school is working towards being a paperless community.
Whilst we were in Australia, we travelled to Sydney with our host families and all of us joined the year group below to go to MLC's very own educational outdoor experience called ‘Banksia’, which was so much fun and a great learning experience as well. Whilst we were at ‘Banksia’, we learned about sustainability and the environment around us as well as going caving. My favourite trip was going to Portsea on the coast with my buddy and her family. All in all it was a great experience and I would recommend it to anyone who gets the chance to go!”
