Oyster Society Talk “An Insight into the World of Law”
Oyster Society talks are designed to give girls an awareness and understanding of the many different career paths open to them and we were delighted to welcome Alistair Graham from Mayer Brown to give us ‘An Insight into the World of Law’.
Upper Sixth Form girl, Eliza Gibbons-West reports, "On Monday 25 September, Mr Graham, a Partner at Mayer Brown, a large law firm in London came to Downe to talk to us, to give us an insight into the legal world. It was incredibly interesting to hear about the complex nature of the field from such an experienced lawyer. He explained the differences between a solicitor and a barrister and showed us just how many different sectors there are available to work in, highlighting the varied opportunities available, especially in the City, and how to access them.
Everyone was eager to ask questions, which Mr Graham answered in great detail, from enquiries about the positives and negatives of a career in Law to what his day-to-day job entailed. It was especially interesting to hear about the opportunities available abroad, as Mayer Brown has a number of global offices, from New York to Paris and Hong Kong.
Overall, I think the talk provided everyone with a good insight into a career in Law and showed us how to work towards entering the sector. It also gave us food for thought about the gap that exists for more female lawyers and Mr Graham encouraged us to help close the gender gap in what is still a male-dominated field.”
