Dame Myra Hess, the English pianist, performed with the School orchestra at the opening of the Jubilee Hall on 15 June 1958. Dame Myra was a great friend of Miss Marjorie Gunne who was Director of Music at Downe House for over fifty years, having joined the staff when the School was in Kent. Myra often came to the School to give recitals and masterclasses. There is an LP recording of the Jubilee Hall recital in the Archives. You can also hear two recordings from the concert here.
The best way to find out more about Downe House is to experience it for yourself. Book a personal tour or join us at one of our Open Mornings, available throughout the year.
