Mathematics

Confidence, enjoyment and fascination are just three of the qualities that we foster in the girls who study mathematics with us. Whatever their level of ability, we encourage application, perseverance and a ‘can do’ attitude.

Head of Department: Mr Oliver Wills

In the Mathematics Department at Downe House, we aim to provide suitably challenging work as well as promote independent learning. We encourage girls to discuss, explore and do so they enjoy the learning journey. It is our hope that our enthusiasm for mathematics is reciprocated.

Mathematics enrichment

Although we trust that our normal lessons are stimulating enough, we also provide a range of enrichment activities from UKMT Maths Challenges and Olympiads, Southampton University Cyber Challenges and Competitions and the M3 Modelling Challenge, essentially entering as many competitions as the girls have time for. Maths also liaises with the STEM subjects for co-curricular enrichment with events with other schools.

Exam success

Success in examinations is also important, and girls are prepared for the highest level qualifications that they can achieve. All girls are currently prepared for the Higher Tier examinations of the Pearson Edexcel International GCSE. Our top set pupils also cover the work for the AQA Level 2 Further Mathematics Certificate, which they can opt to sit in Upper Fifth, in addition to their International GCSE. This provides extension beyond the standard GCSE and is helpful (but not essential) in preparing for A Level Mathematics.

Sixth Form curriculum

A level Mathematics and A level Further Mathematics are on offer for Sixth Form pupils. Approximately 50% of Sixth Form girls opt to study Mathematics each year, both because Mathematics is a fascinating subject and because it is a sought-after qualification.
