Drama Scholars’ take to the stage

5 March 2024

On Friday 1 March, we dedicated an evening to celebrate our Drama Scholars with a meal and a performance of ‘Alice in Wonderland’.

This year, the Drama Scholars have been working hard on a performance of Alice in Wonderland. Their production gave this classic children’s story a dark yet comedic twist. The pupils were able to put their creative flair on the show with the support of the Lower Sixth (Year 12) Geraldine James Scholars.

It has been wonderful to introduce new roles to the scholars programme. We now have a backstage manager, directors and designers. It is so rewarding to see more students venturing into the technical side of the dramatic arts.

The Scholars commented on this wonderfully immersive opportunity, noting their appreciation for the extra responsibility given to them.

It’s been interesting to learn about what goes into making a production happen at Downe House – it’s a lot of work! We have enjoyed looking at the design side of things, especially how lighting and tech play an important role in making a small production feel like you are at a theatre in London.
