Global Exchange trip to New Zealand

15 November 2024

In April 2024, Cymbeline and Amelia (Upper Fifth) had the amazing opportunity to visit New Zealand as part of the Global Schools’ Exchange Programme. Their exchange took place at Waikato Diocesan School for Girls. This is their written account of what they got up to.

An unforgettable exchange experience

In November last year, a remarkable cultural exchange journey began when our buddies, Scarlett and Isla, traveled from Waikato Dio Girls’ School in New Zealand to join us at Downe House for a month. Fast forward a few months, and it was our turn to venture to their side of the world for an adventure we’ll never forget!

Our trip started at the end of the Lent term with a 27-hour journey to New Zealand. A brief stopover in Singapore provided us with a glimpse of its incredible Changi Airport, complete with an indoor waterfall and butterfly garden. Upon arrival in Hamilton, we were warmly greeted by our buddies and their families with a welcome sign that instantly made us feel at home.

Life at Waikato Dio

Our days at Waikato Dio were both fun and enriching. We tried our hands at various subjects like textiles, food technology, and sports science. French lessons, despite being a challenge since neither of us studies the language, were enjoyable thanks to Madame Davies’ friendly and understanding approach.

We also introduced the school to lacrosse by starting a weekly club. Teaching the basics of this new sport was a joy, especially seeing the girls play barefoot—a unique twist!

Adventures Beyond the Classroom

School days ended early, leaving us plenty of time to explore. From riding horses and playing cricket to sea biscuiting on the Waikato River, every moment was a new experience. A visit to Raglan, a famous surfing town with black sand beaches, and tasting the exotic feijoa fruit with Isla’s sister were just some of the highlights.

Scarlett and I explored markets, visited Duck Island for delicious ice cream, and even joined her run club—though only once! A weekend at Isla’s cousin’s beach house in Pauanui introduced us to Hot Water Beach, where thermal springs beneath the sand create natural hot tubs. We also hiked Mount Pauanui for breath-taking views.

Immersing in New Zealand’s Natural Wonders

The diversity of New Zealand’s landscape left us awestruck. We swam at Whangamata, visited the glowworm caves in Rotorua, and toured Hobbiton, the filming location of The Lord of the Rings. Mount Maunganui offered scenic hikes, and we snorkeled at Goat Island, braving thoughts of sharks.

One of the most eye-opening aspects of the trip was experiencing Māori culture, deeply embedded in everyday life. From singing Māori songs in chapel to visiting Maraes, the cultural richness added a profound layer to our exchange.

A Heartfelt Thank You

We are immensely grateful to the Global Partnerships team for organizing such a phenomenal exchange experience. This journey not only allowed us to explore a beautiful country but also helped us forge lifelong friendships with Scarlett and Isla.

We encourage everyone to seize the opportunity to participate in exchange programs. It’s an unparalleled chance to learn, grow, and create memories that will last a lifetime.
