On Friday, Downe House welcomed 40 boys from Ludgrove School for an inspiring and action-packed STEM Day with our Lower Fourth girls. The event was a fantastic opportunity for students to work together, challenge themselves, and dive into the fascinating world of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics.
From the moment they arrived, the students were thrown into a whirlwind of exciting hands-on activities. Under the expert guidance of Mr. Kersley, they investigated whether caffeine had an impact on reaction times—an experiment that sparked fierce competition and some surprising results! Meanwhile, in the Chemistry lab with Ms. Brown, students tackled a consumer science challenge: were expensive brand-name antacids really worth the extra cost, or did the generic alternatives hold their own? The lively discussions and impressive analytical skills on display proved that these young scientists were more than up to the task.
The auditorium, however, was where things really came to life. With Mr. Bradshaw leading the charge, the space was transformed into a high-stakes robotic obstacle course. Laughter, cheers, and the occasional groan of frustration filled the air as students programmed their robots to navigate their way through a maze of challenges. “It was such a fun way to learn about robotics,” Daisy enthused, summing up the excitement of the session perfectly.
Over in the Engineering department, Mr. Hollingworth set students the ultimate test of patience and precision: designing and constructing their very own water clocks. With only a limited set of materials, the teams put their problem-solving skills to the test, creating ingenious designs that showcased both creativity and technical understanding.
Beyond the experiments and challenges, the day was a true celebration of collaboration and curiosity. As Shion reflected, “After the science, I am now curious and want to learn more about STEM.” That sense of excitement and discovery is exactly what the day was all about—igniting a passion for STEM that will hopefully last a lifetime.
A huge thank you to the Ludgrove boys and their teachers for joining us, and to our incredible Downe House staff for making the day such a success. We look forward to more opportunities to learn, collaborate, and innovate together!
