Marlston House STEM Experience

5 2 月 2025

Last week, we were delighted to welcome 21 students from Marlston House for an inspiring day of hands-on learning. The visit provided an opportunity for the students to explore what the school has to offer at secondary level, with a particular focus on STEM subjects.

The day began with an engaging Biology session where students learnt about the composition of blood. Using common food items, they created realistic models to understand its key components. They then had the unique opportunity to examine real human blood under microscopes, alongside veins and arteries, bringing the topic to life in an unforgettable way.

In Chemistry, excitement levels soared as the students explored the power of combustion. They witnessed the dramatic explosion of ‘Flossy’ the nitrocellulose sheep and experimented with the law of thermal expansion. One of the most thrilling moments was setting fire to their own hands using methane gas bubbles—a safe but spectacular demonstration of chemical reactions in action!

After a morning of hands-on science, the students enjoyed lunch and took on a series of science-based riddles before heading home. Their enthusiasm and curiosity made the visit a true pleasure, and we were delighted to receive such positive feedback from Mark Templeman, who said:

Thank you so much for hosting us today. The lessons were fantastic, and the girls had an amazing time! They were especially excited by the fire explosion in Chemistry, thoroughly enjoyed lunch, and were delighted with their goodie bags. The facilities were outstanding, and the teachers were truly inspiring—an experience they will be talking about for a long time!

It was a joy to welcome such engaged and well-behaved students, and we look forward to hosting more visits like this in the future!
