Insight into the life and times of an Equine Vet

Equestrian Captain, Honor organised an evening for girls interested in the equestrian world with top international FEI Equine Vet and Equine Sports Medicine Expert from Lambourn Equine Vets, Chris Elliot.

Honor reports on the talk,

“Within my role as Equestrian Captain, it has been my aim to offer equestrian lectures to any girl interested, including inviting external speakers too. We were thrilled that Chris was able to come and share his experiences of day-to-day life as a high-level equine vet. Within his talk, he covered the processes involved in applying to study veterinary medicine. Alongside this, he revealed his career highlights so far and the challenges associated with this type of work.

It was a thoroughly engaging talk for an audience of girls from across the School bought together by their interest in horses. Chris showed many photographs of his travels to some of the major equestrian events, including when he worked at the 2016 Olympics in Rio as a veterinary delegate. It was interesting to hear about the variety of different jobs he has undertaken within the world of an equine vet, including volunteering to support horses being transported overseas by air.

Chris spoke of the benefits gained by independently organising work experience during his veterinary studies, which took him abroad and encouraged him to seek further voluntary work in Egypt after he graduated. His talk was highly motivational regardless of whether the audience aspired to be vets or not, as his key messages were ones of working hard, self-belief and the power of kindness and networking. Chris’s passion for his work shone through and everyone enjoyed seeing photographs of the animals that he has worked with.

Thank you to Chris for delivering such an inspirational talk and to Miss Clare Chamberlayne, School Equestrian Coordinator for her support. Finally, a special thanks to Miss Muir for her assistance with the logistics of organising this event and for her encouragement throughout the year.

Downe House welcomes a huge range of speakers as part of the lecture programme with the aim of enriching the curriculum and to give an introduction to a variety of career paths.
