On the road with the Elective Programme

Downe House’s flagship super-curricular initiative, the Elective Programme has been extended to provide bespoke academic workshops that spark intellectual curiosity in prep school children, aptly named the Elective Experience.

28 March 2019

Over the past week, members of the teaching staff have visited Forres Sandle Manor and Beaudesert Park School to run academic workshops based on one of the many elective topics currently on offer. Pupils at Forres Sandle Manor were treated to a detailed exploration of the Reformation and the invention of the printing press.

Characteristic of the Elective Programme’s eclectic style, girls and boys at Beaudesert Park School were energised by a whirlwind introduction to Film Studies. They spent their session discussing and analysing a whole range of film clips from Harry Potter to Indiana Jones to Citizen Kane!

Dr Atherton, Head of the Elective Programme commented, “Given how proud we are of the Elective Programme and the rigorous academic enrichment it provides, it was natural to want to share this with prep schools. In keeping with the aims of the Programme, the Elective Experience is also a wonderful opportunity to work with our prep school colleagues to help challenge and stretch their pupils well beyond the curriculum. Enjoying learning for the sake of learning is so important!’

As part of the Elective Experience for prep schools, further workshops are planned with participating prep schools in the Summer Term.
