The Annual Downe House Spelling Bee: A Buzzing Success! 🐝

14 Aralık 2024

In November, we tested the linguistic prowess of our Remove students, with Mr Gill as question master, for the annual Spelling Bee competition. The much-anticipated event brought the whole year group together in the auditorium, ready to showcase their spelling skills and House spirit.

The event began with a tech-savvy twist: all pupils used their Surfaces to complete a Microsoft Quiz on 5-7 letter words. The top scorers for each House—Darwin, Hill, and Hermitage—were drafted up to represent their houses, setting the tone for the competition, adding an exciting layer of strategy.

Next, the spotlight turned to the front of the auditorium, where three brave spellers from each House took their places. Round two tested their mettle with 8-9 letter words, but the real excitement came in the final quickfire buzzer round. With words spanning 10-15 letters, the tension was palpable as team members raced to hit the buzzer and spell correctly.

After several intense rounds, Hill House emerged victorious, lifting the coveted Spelling Bee trophy and earning a large box of chocolates. Congratulations to Lily, Allegra and Faramade for winning for Hill.

The nine team members were also rewarded with smaller chocolate prizes, sweetening the taste of victory and participation alike.

Well done to all our spellers for making this year’s competition a true celebration of skill and teamwork! 🏆✨

We all love dressing up and enjoying a lovely dinner before dancing our hearts out. I always look forward to our rehearsals—it’s my favourite activity of the week! It’s a great way to bond with the Lower Sixth and meet boys from other schools.
