Yasmin, Amelia, Clara and Alice from Upper Sixth (Year 13) teach us about The Caledonian Society and what it means to them as young people.
The Caledonian Society, more fondly known at Downe as CalSoc, is a student-led Scottish reeling society where all Sixth Form students are welcome, regardless of their experience level. It is one of the most popular societies in Sixth Form, offering a fantastic opportunity to try something new and enjoy quality time with friends.
We meet every Friday evening, providing a chance to unwind and have fun after a long, busy week. Dances are taught in a relaxed, stress-free environment, and the atmosphere during rehearsals and events is always filled with laughter. It’s also a wonderful way to make new friends in a fun and inclusive setting. CalSoc rehearsals and events serve as great preparation for participation in similar Caledonian Society activities at university and beyond, where such traditions are frequently celebrated.
This year, we have a range of exciting events planned, partnering with several boys’ schools, including Harrow, Radley, Eton, and Winchester. Our most recent event was the Harrow Caledonian Ball, hosted by Downe. It was an amazing evening that began with a delightful sit-down dinner, where we met new people and reconnected with old friends. The dinner was followed by a lively evening of reeling, with music ranging from traditional Scottish tunes to upbeat pop songs to close the night. Dressing up in formal attire added to the charm, with all the girls in stunning dresses and the boys in smart suits.
After this successful event, we hosted another wonderful evening of reeling and a sit-down dinner with Eton. This, too, was a night to remember—filled with dancing, laughter, and a cheerful, festive atmosphere.
We all love dressing up and enjoying a lovely dinner before dancing our hearts out. I always look forward to our rehearsals—it’s my favourite activity of the week! It’s a great way to bond with the Lower Sixth and meet boys from other schools.
