With our commitment to inspire a love of reading in every pupil at Downe House, it is no wonder that World Book Day is one of our favourite dates in the calendar!
This year, our enthusiastic English Department, Library team and Literary Seniors organised fantastic events which had the whole School community showing off their love of literature.
The Murray Centre held an array of literary-themed puzzles, including a scavenger hunt around the building, and a quiz to guess famous book titles hidden in puns made from sweet treats.
There was also a book exchange to peruse, where girls could swap a book they brought along for a new one of their choice.
Meanwhile, much excitement was had all across the school grounds, as girls raced to find hidden mystery books which, once found, could be unwrapped to reveal a book to take home.
Our Catering Department pulled out all the stops with dishes such as a ‘Green Eggs and Ham salad’ and ‘Bruce Bogtrotter’s Chocolate Cake’ to deliver a delightful Literary Lunch.
Following this, our Lower School pupils gathered to hear Mrs Boswell and Mr Owen, from the English Department, read aloud from their favourite children’s stories which was truly magical.
For the afternoon, we handed over to author Sara Grant, who ran inspiring workshops on creative writing. Sara then inspired the Lower School in the evening, showing them how they could all come up with amazing ideas for writing.
You can watch a video round-up of this fantastic day here. We are already looking forward to next year!
The best way to find out more about Downe House is to experience it for yourself. Book a personal tour or join us at one of our Open Mornings, available throughout the year.
